From natural to artificial life: Biomimetic mechanisms in animat designs

چکیده

This paper describes several models that incorporate some biomimetic mechanisms into the control architecture of an animat that has to survive in a changing environment. The adaptive capacities of these mechanisms are compared to engineering solutions, in application domains that involve navigation, action selection, and evolutionary design. It is argued that, although impressive adaptive capacities are already aaorded by such biomimetic mechanisms , these capacities are nevertheless limited by the shortcomings of current biological knowledge. It is also argued that these shortcomings could be remedied were biologists willing to take advantage of the bottom-up and synthetic point of view with which artiicial life might complement their traditional top-down and analytic approach.

Biomimetic Mechanisms of Self-organisation and Adaptation in Animats

This article describes two ways of including biomimetic mechanisms of self-organization and adaptation in the control architecture of animats. The first one relies on a human designer and the second one on artificial selection. It is shown that such mechanisms contribute to the survival capacities of animats. In particular, they make it possible to walk, to avoid obstacles, to reach goals, to b...

Animat Vision: Active Vision in Artificial Animals

We propose and demonstrate a new paradigm for active vision research that draws upon recent advances in the fields of artificial life and computer graphics. A software alternative to the prevailing hardware vision mindset, animat vision prescribes artificial animals, or animats, situated in physics-based virtual worlds as autonomous virtual robots with active perception systems. To be operative...

Evaluating the Effect of a Flexible Spine on the Evolution of Quadrupedal Gaits

Animals demonstrate a level of agility currently unmatched in their robotic counterparts. The elasticity of muscles and tendons increase not only performance, but also the efficiency of movements. In contrast, robots are often constructed with rigid components connected by motors. However, recently compliant actuators and materials have been introduced to enhance robot designs, emulating the fl...

Artificial pigs in space: using artificial intelligence and artificial life techniques to design animal housing.

Computer simulations have been used by us since the early 1970s to gain an understanding of the spacing and movement patterns of confined animals. The work has progressed from the early stages, in which we used randomly positioned points, to current investigations of animats (computer-simulated animals), which show low levels of learning via artificial neural networks. We have determined that 1...
